A fire erupted on the first floor of a building located at 7/5 Kalitala Road, Kolkata, at approximately 01:20 hours on Sunday. The fire spread rapidly, prompting the immediate deployment of four fire tenders to the scene. The firefighters worked efficiently to contain the fire, and by 02:05 hours, the blaze was brought under control. The fire caused extensive damage to the first floor of the building, though the extent of the damage to other parts of the structure remains under assessment.
During the operation, emergency responders discovered 65-year-old Baby Mondal in a room on the first floor. She was removed from the building and rushed to M.R. Bangur Hospital, where she was declared "brought dead." No additional fatalities or injuries have been reported from other residents or individuals present in the building at the time of the incident.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and local authorities have requisitioned the assistance of a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team to conduct a thorough investigation. The FSL team will work to identify the fire's origin and any contributing factors. In the meantime, the area has been secured, and authorities are continuing to assess the structural integrity of the building. The situation in the vicinity is reported to be peaceful, with no further hazards identified.
